Anderson is a city in and the county seat of Anderson County, South Carolina, United States.The population was estimated at 26,242 in 2006, and the city was the center of an urbanized area of 70,530.
Developed after 1826, when the Pendleton District was split into Pickens District and Anderson Counties, and a new county courthouse was built here. Originally known as Anderson Courthouse, later changed to simply Anderson. Named for General Robert Anderson, Revolutionary soldier who surveyed the territory in the 1770's.
Site of the first electric-powered cotton gin, built in 1897, giving the city the nickname "Electric City." Anderson is the home of Anderson University, a selective private university of approximately 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students.
